Strength for the Work Outside the Gym: Marc’s GBSC Story
For Marc, one of the clearest signs of progress happened while building a fence for a friend.
The work was demanding. But when he came into Great Bay Strength & Conditioning afterward, he told Eric and Mike that, apart from some minor stiffness, his back felt good. A year earlier, he says, the same kind of work would have meant spending the next day in bed.
“I can do physical labor without needing to take the next day off to recover.”
That is the change that matters most to him: feeling more capable in his day-to-day life.
When looking after yourself keeps slipping
Marc describes his commitment to health as coming and going in waves. Work, stress, frequent meals out, and low motivation after work made it difficult to rebuild a routine.
Other gyms had felt impersonal. He could arrive, do his workout, and leave without much interaction with a trainer or another member. Exercise often felt like another task.
Before joining GBSC, Marc had already put significant effort into his health. He increased his walking and reports losing roughly 18–20 pounds between January and October 2025. He also attended physical therapy for longstanding back pain. During PT, he was encouraged to add strength training.
A program built around his starting point
Marc joined GBSC in Newington in October 2025. Early conversations with Eric and Mike covered his fitness background, previous injuries, and the limitations they needed to consider. Together, they established a program he could build on.
He valued being able to discuss what was difficult, find alternative exercises, and talk about when he was ready for a greater challenge. Training became more interactive and engaging.
That is what individualization meant to Marc: a suitable starting point and coaches he could keep talking with as he progressed.
Progress he could feel outside the gym
Since joining, Marc reports losing another 15 pounds and experiencing significantly less back discomfort. He also describes feeling more comfortable with his appearance, including taking his shirt off at the beach.
But the fence project is the example he returns to. He remembers telling Eric and Mike how different his back felt after physical work compared with the year before.
“This may be an anecdotal feeling, but it is what makes my day-to-day activities so much better.”
Conversations about food intake and macros also helped him think about preparing for his workouts.
These are Marc’s reported experiences. Walking, physical therapy, food choices, and training were all part of his journey. His story does not establish that gym training alone caused the changes, and individual experiences vary.
A place he wants to return to
The relationships matter, too. Marc describes GBSC as feeling like a second home. Being around coaches and members who enjoy interacting helped change the way he felt about showing up.
“I can't help but feel great and leave each session with a smile.”
