How Andrea Built Endurance for a 5K and a 10-Mile Hike
Andrea wanted a healthier routine long before she joined Great Bay Strength & Conditioning in Newington, New Hampshire. Her work and commute left little room for regular exercise. Moving to remote work in 2020 finally gave her more space for movement, better food, and sleep.
But having more time did not automatically make a routine stick.
“For years I wanted that lifestyle but was unable to create a plan for myself that I could stick to for more than a month,” she says.
Andrea joined GBSC in 2022. What helped her move forward was structure, accountability, and eventually a broader view of what her training could make possible.
Building a routine she could keep
Andrea describes an accountability program with Eric as an experience that has stayed with her. Together, they looked at how her existing habits affected everyday life and training, established a baseline, and added the structure and routine she had been missing.
Over that year, she says those changes helped her feel better and achieve lifting and fitness goals.
That foundation mattered. It gave her something to build on as her goals and training needs evolved.
Looking beyond a single lift
For a time, Andrea focused primarily on lifting. She later began putting more attention into GBSC’s Engine Builder workout options, broadening her training beyond strength alone.
She reports that the past year brought noticeable improvements in her endurance, energy, and ability to recover. It also changed how she thought about a successful training day.
“This program re-centers me and reminds me that the bigger picture and longer-term goals are more important than a single lift on any given day.”
Engine Builder is an option within GBSC’s coached group training. Your coach helps you choose an appropriate challenge for your starting point and goals. You do not need to arrive with Andrea’s experience or ambitions.
Progress she could recognize outside the gym
Andrea points to three moments that made the change tangible:
Completing an extended conditioning workout without needing to pause.
Running a 5K at a steady pace without stopping, her first since she stopped commuting.
Completing a week of substantial daily walking that included a 10-mile hike with moderate climbs.
She credits the Engine Builder workouts and guidance from GBSC’s coaches with helping her build the endurance for those milestones.
Her story is about more than finishing a particular workout. A routine that once lasted less than a month became a foundation for goals she could carry into the rest of her life.
These are Andrea’s experiences over several years of training, shared in her own account. Your starting point, goals, and progress will be your own.
What would you like your fitness to make possible?
It might be a hike, more energy for a full week, or simply a routine that feels manageable. You do not need a race on the calendar to begin.
