Getting Back into Strength Training After 40 near Portsmouth, NH

By Eric Morris · Great Bay Strength & Conditioning · Newington, NH

If you are in your 40s or 50s and thinking about returning to strength training, the difficult part may be finding room for it. Work, children and caring for other people can leave very little time for yourself. You may also be wondering whether you can still do the exercises you used to do.

At GBSC in Newington, near Portsmouth, we help busy adults find a starting point that fits their current life. Our coached group classes last 45 minutes. You can ask questions, learn the movements and build a repeatable routine without needing to arrive already fit.

Start with the life you have now

Your old routine is useful history, but it does not have to be your new standard. Before choosing how often to train, answer three questions:

  • What do you want more strength for: playing with your children, hiking, carrying things comfortably, or feeling more confident in daily life?

  • Which two windows in your week could realistically include a 45-minute class plus travel?

  • What usually disrupts those windows, and what is your backup?

Those answers give your coach something practical to work with. “I can usually make Tuesday morning, but Thursday depends on my work schedule” is more useful than promising to attend every day.

What a realistic twice-weekly plan could look like

For someone whose mornings open up after school drop-off, Monday and Thursday at 9:00 am might work. For someone with a predictable lunch window, Monday and Friday at 11:30 am could fit. If evenings are easier, Monday and Thursday at 5:00 pm are another option.

These are examples, not a prescription or a reservation. Choose the times that work for you, and identify one backup class. Check our current Newington class schedule and confirm your first visit with Eric. If your week is difficult to plan, try the Fitness Week Builder.

How coaching helps when you feel out of practice

Momentum is our starting track for newer and returning members. A coach helps you understand the session and choose movements and weights for your starting point. Performance and Engine Builder provide other training options within the same coached group structure.

You can tell your coach when a movement is unfamiliar or does not fit. The useful decision might be a different exercise, a lighter weight or a smaller range of motion. Read how we approach exercise adjustments.

If you have an injury or a clinician's restrictions, share those before your first session so we can discuss what support is appropriate. Coaching at GBSC does not replace medical assessment or rehabilitation.

Choose the amount of individualization you need

Coached group classes give you a shared session structure with coaching and exercise options. Semi-private coaching provides more individualized programming. Being over 40 does not automatically mean you need semi-private training; the choice depends on your goals, starting point and the support you want.

Compare group and semi-private coaching, then review the current rates. The $99 first-month offer applies to coached group classes; semi-private coaching is priced separately.

Look for evidence that the routine fits

In your first month, notice whether you understand the sessions, feel comfortable asking for help, and can repeat your chosen schedule. Ask your coach what to adjust if the plan is difficult to maintain.
